Another Year, Another Reason to Hate Technical Recruiters
Tue, Dec 30th 2008 12:02p   Eric Shupps
Body: Here it is, almost 2009 and I've gone nearly the whole year without ranting about recruiters but I just can't take it any more. Way back in 2006 I penned an Open Letter to SharePoint Recruiters, begging them to stop trying to combine a developer and architect into a single position. A bit later, my good buddy Adam Buenz shot some arrows at the general recruiter community for not understanding anything about the positions they are trying to fill. Sadly, it seems that most recruiters have co [read] Keywords: forms workflow community development email google integration linking properties server sharepoint sql

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2008
Wed, Dec 24th 2008 11:56a   Eric Shupps
Body: One of the best parts of my job is being able to travel the world and meet new people everywhere I go. I have so many friends in so many corners of the globe that it's hard to keep track of them all. While everyone has a slightly different tradition over the holidays, I believe we all can agree that it's a time to set aside any differences we may have and revel in the joys of the season. However you choose to celebrate, let us all be thankful for the blessings in our lives and look towards [read] Keywords: community

Troubling MSDN Article Content
Thu, Dec 18th 2008 4:56p   Eric Shupps
Body: Kim Nguyen over at Pariveda shot me an email today asking about some confusing terminology in this MSDN article. While I was perusing it, and marveling at how the author was able to completely mixup Site, Site Collection and Web object references with alarming regularity, I noticed the following paragraph: "For example, if you configure confirmation and automatic deletion to happen on the fifth day of each month, make it a policy to back up your server on the fourth day. Body: This coming year we have not one but two Best Practices conferences on the calendar and the good news is that the folks across the pond are finally getting a chance to participate. The first conference is being held in San Diego, California on the 2nd - 4th of February. The second takes place in London April 6th - 8th. If you had a chance to attend the Washington, DC conference held earlier this year then you know that the quality of content is as good as it gets; if not, you really need [read] Keywords: designer application applications archive community enterprise interface microsoft office server sharepoint

Early Impressions of the New MacBook Pro
Wed, Dec 17th 2008 5:00p   Eric Shupps
Body: Since I'm all into this Mac thing now, quite a few people have asked me for my impressions of the new unibody (late 2008) MacBook Pro. Here are my thoughts, in no particular order (thanks to John Holliday for getting me to write these down): Construction – Can you say “gorgeous” about a computer without sounding like a freak? I don’t know, but this thing sure is well built. It’s solid as a rock and the ability to swap hard drives with the turn of a single screw is dyn-o-mite (we [read] Keywords: apple mac macbook macintosh vista vmware

A Tale of Two Macs
Wed, Dec 17th 2008 12:55a   Eric Shupps
Body: You may have noticed that there has been precious little blogging in this space recently. That's mostly due to spending the last few weeks trying to get my technology back in line so I could be at least halfway productive. After much gnashing of teeth and cursing the computer gods (both in Cupertino and Redmond) I have finally settled back into something of a groove. As Sean Skinner detailed in his Unity post, when his Dell gave up the ghost one afternoon it put us in a bit of a bind. Happy Thanksgiving 2008
Thu, Nov 27th 2008 11:56a   Eric Shupps
Body: Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year.  Unlike Christmas, there's no commercialism, no gaudy, overwrought decoration, no pretense - it's all about family, friends and lots of good food.  It's also a time to talk to our children about our unique history, all the things we have to be thankful for, and the price that many have paid to keep us safe.    So here's hoping that you have a safe and happy holiday(regardless of whether you actually celebrate it or not in your corner [read] Keywords:

Site Definitions – the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 7:52p   Eric Shupps
Body: Recently there has been a great deal of attention devoted to SharePoint Site Definitions in the blogosphere. A month ago I posted an article to the ISPA web site regarding the pros and cons of SharePoint Designer versus Custom Site Definitions. SharePoint Designer Workflows, Tasks, and the Annoying “Access Denied” Error
Fri, Oct 17th 2008 4:55p   Eric Shupps
Body: As most of you know, I try to avoid SharePoint Designer like that creepy distant relative at family reunions who always gives you the heebie-jeebies. But lately we've had some clients who insist on doing everything "out of the box", so I've had to grit my teeth and, with great trepidation, fire up ye old SPD for some simple workflow creation. I can tell you this – whoever decided that Pepsi should have the contract to provide bevera [read] Keywords: office

TechEd US 2008 IT Professionals, Day One
Thu, Jun 12th 2008 4:53p   Eric Shupps
Body: Tuesday kicked off TechEd 2008 North America IT Professionals week. Attendance is fantastic, with nearly 10,000 people attending from all around the world (that's an unofficial estimate; I'm sure Microsoft will publish official numbers after the event). We're exhibiting in the SharePoint Partner Zone, talking to everyone we can about Sonar. A lot of people are interested in SharePoint performance and we've had a great deal of traffic so far. The vendor expo was amazing, which I'm sure is d [read] Keywords: Sharepoint archive microsoft office php sharepoint

TechEd US 2008
Fri, Jun 6th 2008 5:59p   Eric Shupps
Body: As usual, TechEd 2008 has been a complete whirlwind. This year the conference is split into two tracks, one for Developers this past week and one for IT Professionals next week. Instead of blogging day by day, I thought I would break down the highlights of the week. SharePint by Night Monday night Andrew Connell organized a SharePint by Night event at BB King's. Along with AC, we had John Holliday, Darrin Bishop, Robert Foster, Brad Smith, Eugene Rosenfeld, Robert Bogue, Ted Pattison [read] Keywords: Sharepoint Workflow archive blogging community development microsoft office sharepoint

Sonar Standard Version 1.1 Now Available
Sun, Jun 1st 2008 8:43p   Eric Shupps
Body: It's been an interesting few months since the release of the first version of Sonar. We've had thousands of downloads, lots of good press, and a great deal of interest from SharePoint developers and administrators around the world. Like any first version, Sonar had a few rough edges, and we've been working diligently to fix issues, respond to feature requests, and improve some of the ancillary areas like installation, user registration, license activation, and the like. Today we're relea [read] Keywords: Sharepoint ajax application applications database desktop enterprise microsoft server sharepoint

Off to TechEd US 2008
Fri, May 30th 2008 7:46p   Eric Shupps
Body: I'm busily trying to wrap up all my loose ends before heading off to Orlando for TechEd US 2008. As usual, I'll be filing daily reports on the various goings on, both at the show and at all the after-hours functions (see this post for a list of activities). Unfortunately, I will be working the Office TLC booth most of Developer week and the BinaryWave booth during IT Pro Week so I won't have many reports from the sessions. I'd really like to see AC's various talks, drop in on my friend Tod [read] Keywords: Sharepoint archive office sharepoint

Timer Jobs, Alerts and the Daylight Savings Time Hotfix
Fri, May 23rd 2008 6:49p   Eric Shupps
Body: Not too long ago I had a problem with MOSS timer jobs delaying execution until an hour after they were created.  I was puzzled, as the farm I was working on was a clean install of slipstreamed SP1.  After some searching, I found the KB941422 post-SP1 hotfix.  The install was no walk in the park - it was as intrusive as a service pack, forcing me to bring down every server in the farm - but once it was in place my timer jobs started behaving themselves.   Just a couple of days ago  [read] Keywords: Sharepoint microsoft server sharepoint

SharePoint After Hours Is a Hit!
Wed, May 21st 2008 10:17a   Eric Shupps
Body: Thanks to all who attended our first SharePoint After Hours session at the D/FW SharePoint Community meeting last night. It was a very interactive group and we went deep on building features and solution packages. A special thanks to Phillip Wheat, Microsoft Architect/Developer Evangelist, for his assistance, advice and insight. For those who attended, be sure to email me your contact information so we can add you to the distribution list for future events. Also, if you have any topics you [read] Keywords: Sharepoint community development email microsoft sharepoint

D/FW SharePoint Community - SharePoint After Hours
Fri, May 9th 2008 10:46a   Eric Shupps
Body: To all the developer types who attend the D/FW SharePoint Community meetings, the schedule is pretty full for the May 20th meeting and we might not be able to squeeze in the break-out sessions as part of the regular agenda.  Fear not - we can still crunch some code after everyone else has left, even if we have to move the session down to Starbucks.   If there are any particular topics you would like to cover, post a comment and we'll try to squeeze it in.  For starters, I have s [read] Keywords: Sharepoint community sharepoint

Welcome to the Un-Social
Fri, May 9th 2008 12:08a   Eric Shupps
Body: Whenever a new platform, technology, or computing paradigm comes along there is the inevitable rush to proclaim it the greatest thing since sliced bread, the cure to all of mankind's ills, the savior of civilization. What usually starts out as a worthwhile experiment in solving a particular problem with some out-of-the-box thinking quickly mushrooms into a hodgepodge of nonsensical concepts and reality-stretching terminology once the marketing types take over. Sadly, this usually leads t [read] Keywords: Sharepoint Collaboration Social computing application applications blogger community enterprise facebook google interface linking mobile myspace networking sharepoint twitter

Flame and Ye Shall Be Flamed in Return
Tue, Oct 16th 2007 2:49p   Eric Shupps
Body: I was all geared up to author a scathing respone to this ridiculous post but I was struggling with some way to write it without using the words 'idiot', 'imbecile' and 'moron' all in the same sentence.  Sometimes, I just can't get beyond the urge to reach through my computer and slap the bejeezus out of some SharePoint-hating dolt.  Fortunately for me, Bil Simser, Tony Bierman, and Bob Mixon beat me to it and they managed to be much nicer than I would have been.   Wasn't there a [read] Keywords: Sharepoint Collaboration apple archive development java security sharepoint
