Announcing Workflow Essentials for SharePoint
Fri, Nov 21st 2008 7:59p Sharepoint Solutions Nearly all organizations which implement SharePoint® seek to automate business processes by taking advantage of its workflow capabilities. Many of these same companies quickly discover that although the plumbing is there to create robust workflows in SharePoint Designer, more tools are needed to effectively automate their processes. At that point a few options come to mind: companies can either pay programmers to author custom workflow activities, or they can purchase an expensive third party a [read] Keywords: designer

How to Use SharePoint Discussion Boards in Outlook 2007
Fri, Nov 21st 2008 12:53a Sharepoint Solutions As you can imagine, we are heavy SharePoint users here at SharePoint Solutions. Much of the work we all do every day is done with SharePoint. Unlike our instructors, consultants, and developers, everyone isn't a SharePoint expert. Just like in your own organization, we have many Information Workers. Recently, we've been utilizing SharePoint Discussion Boards more. So I sent an email to our internal staff letting them know they may find these discussion boards easier to use if they connect them t [read] Keywords: email

Understanding Calendar Columns in a SharePoint List Calendar View
Thu, Nov 13th 2008 7:55p Sharepoint Solutions Last week, one of my students asked me about the Calendar Columns when creating a Calendar View on a SharePoint list. In the particular exercise we were doing, all the columns were set exactly the same. Although this was a good choice for the task at hand, it didn't demonstrate how the different options show up differently in the monthly, weekly, and daily views. To understand this, you really need to see it with screenshots, so here is an example. On my SharePoint site, I've created a custom li [read] Keywords: formula

A SharePoint Conference for $100! Wow!

You're really going to love this conference! I think this is the third virtual conference SSWUG has presented, but it is their first with a SharePoint track. The other tracks include SQL Server, Business Intelligence, and .NET Developer. InfoPath Pattern matching - “Email” field
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 12:53a Sharepoint Solutions While teaching the InfoPath/Workflow class last week, I had the need to restrict a textbox control in an InfoPath form to only contain emails. If an invalid email is inserted, it should throw a validation error. Out of the box, the patterns provided by InfoPath are very limited. It only provides patterns for Phone Number, SSN, and Zip code: I thought surely somewhere out on the web I would find the pattern needed for this, but to my surprise, I couldn't find "a working one" (doesn't mean that i [read] Keywords: workflow

Task Escalation using Workflows
Thu, Oct 16th 2008 12:58a Sharepoint Solutions I was recently showing one of the students in my class (who, by the way, was one of four students that traveled all the way from Ghana to attend four different SharePoint Solutions classes) how to assign tasks and escalate the tasks using a SharePoint Designer workflow. Before we started, he was convinced that they needed to do this in Visual Studio. I quickly told him "that's completely doable with a SharePoint Designer workflow" and began showing him a quick demo of how to do it. When you crea [read] Keywords: designer

EXACTLY where SharePoint documents are stored
Tue, Aug 12th 2008 11:52p Sharepoint Solutions Ever wonder EXACTLY where SharePoint stores documents? This isn't going to be news to developers or others that have followed SharePoint for a good while, but if you are relatively new to SharePoint it might be somewhat eye-opening. Problem with SharePoint Infrastructure Update can affect your extranet
Tue, Jul 29th 2008 8:53p Sharepoint Solutions This WSS KB article (KBID 951695, Last Review : July 23, 2008, Revision : 4.0) from Microsoft includes an acknowledgment of a known issue after installing the Infrastructure Update (32-bit, 64-bit). Looping Through Items in a SharePoint List with SharePoint Designer Workflows

When Good Web Parts Go Bad
Sat, Apr 12th 2008 11:49a Sharepoint Solutions Here's a quick tip for a Saturday morning. At some point it's bound to happen. You'll mess up a perfectly good SharePoint page by incorrectly configuring a web part. You may add some incorrect custom HTML, JavaScript, or style sheet code to a Content Editor Web Part, and then not be able to edit or close the web part. Or you may add a page viewer web part to frame an external web page and the webmaster controlling that external page writes some code to break it out of frames. Even with the latest release of SharePoint, its built-in discussion and blog capabilities have been a disappointment to all but the least demanding users. The scalable, feature-rich forums and flexible blogging functionality of Community Server are what users really want. Our engineers here at SharePoint Solutions have spent some time and [read] Keywords: Sharepoint

Our Newest Class – Mission: Automation – SharePoint Workflow and InfoPath
Mon, Jan 21st 2008 11:30a Sharepoint Solutions For the past year, students have been telling me they wanted more information on how to use Workflow Designer in SharePoint Designer to write workflows to automate their business processes. I hear this after they use the out-of-the-box workflows in our MOSS Core Features class. When I wrote the MOSS Advanced Features class, I included an entire module dedicated to SharePoint Designer Workflows and InfoPath. Students continue to tell me that was great, but they still want more about workflows and [read] Keywords: Sharepoint

Checking for a NULL Date Field in SharePoint Designer Workflow
Sun, Jan 20th 2008 1:37p Sharepoint Solutions I was recently teaching an Advanced SharePoint class in Richardson, TX and a student was expressing his frustration over Microsoft's apparent oversight within the SharePoint Designer workflow wizard. One of the "IF" conditions is a simple testing of the value of a field…"If this equals that." He wanted to test a date field in SharePoint to see if it was empty or not. Problem is, when you select a field that is typed as DATE in SharePoint Designer, there is no test for the empty or null conditi [read] Keywords: Sharepoint

VMs Disappearing from Microsoft Virtual Server
Sun, Jan 13th 2008 6:41p Sharepoint Solutions I know this isn't specifically a SharePoint issue, but... Problem: I use Microsoft Virtual Server to run all the SharePoint VMs that I use. At any given time, I may have 4-6 VMs on my notebook computer. Recently I ran into a problem where I kept losing my VMs that I set up on Virtual Server. Each time I came back into the Virtual Server administration web site (after restarting my notebook) my VMs that I set up from the last time would be missing. This caused me to have to go into the directory [read] Keywords: Sharepoint

Mon, Jan 7th 2008 12:17a Sharepoint Solutions Howdy from Texas! Russell Wright here, from SharePoint Solutions (Dallas office). Promote and recommend SharePoint content
Wed, Nov 14th 2007 11:06a Sharepoint Solutions So where do you currently go to look for pointers on various SharePoint content…? There are so many sites which claim to provide links to "good" SharePoint content that it's hard to keep count. Why not have a central place where users can recommend various content on functionality related to SharePoint Products and Technologies and then other users can recommend that content if they find it useful... Kinda like how digg.com currently does it. Well, this concept is now a reality! SharePointPed [read] Keywords: Sharepoint

SharePoint Designer Workflows: How to Tell Which Fields Have Changed
Wed, Oct 31st 2007 4:49p Sharepoint Solutions If a workflow is set to start when an item is changed, you might think that it's impossible to determine exactly which field, or fields, have changed. This is because the workflow doesn't start until after the item has already changed. This can actually be accomplished though, using a SharePoint Designer workflow without too much pain. The Scenario For our scenario, we have a document library named "Documents". We have added a custom column named "Comments" to that library. If the Comments fiel [read] Keywords: Sharepoint
